The multi-color status display provides immediate confirmation from across the room about whether a perceived Internet issue is real or not. When green, the connection is clean; When magenta (a.k.a. purple), errors are being detected; When red, the connection is dead. Also, the displayed time format is "D HH:MM:SS" where the 'D' is for days (i.e., the number of 24-hour periods).
The most significant benefit of the display is not having to waste time troubleshooting your Internet connection if the problem is one of the many other things that can appear similar (e.g., a browser issue, computer problem, poor Wi-Fi, slow website, overloaded video source,...).
